The Travelled Look Becomes Home Decorating Trend

The travelled trend brings a little bit of the world into your home by decorating with original crafts pieces from international locations and modern interpretations of culturally important prints and styles.

Andrea Ford has a few ideas to incorporate her favorite aspects of this look:

Ethically Sourced Craft Pieces as Functional Art

These crafts are produced using a variety of techniques and textures. Colors vary from natural hues to faded/patina depending on source of color. The best sources to find these textiles are stores and boutiques that have relationships with the artists or people who source the pieces on travel trips. Each of these pieces has a story to tell and they are rich in history.

Modern Takes on Cultural Representation

Bold and graphic suzani prints are making waves in modern upholstery fabrics. Suzanis were originally needle crafts for wall hangings made in Central Asian countries, but can now be found in big box stores everywhere. And recycled materials -- coffee bean bags with international origins -- are popping up as well. Try adding textiles that have cultural images or international languages reinterpreted on fabrics or reproduction ikats/batiks from Indonesia - they are less delicate and use upholstery grade cottons and canvas on everyday items.

How to Apply It

The key is to choose pieces that you respond to emotionally -- through color, texture or the story behind the craft. Layer modern with handcrafted pieces for the freshest look. Groups of objects always look best.
