Estate-Sale Shopping 101

Designer and TV personality Tommy Smythe loves an estate sale. And with good reason! They're full of fixer-upper finds just waiting to be restored to their former glory. Heed Tommy's top tips to make sure your next sale is a successful one.

1. Be prepared.
Have an idea of the items you are looking for even before identifying nearby estate sales. Make a list and take some measurements!

2. Do your research.
Check online and in local newspapers for estate sales happening near you. They're quite frequent, so you want to make sure you're ready and available.

3. Scan and strategize.
Attend the preview and set your strategy accordingly. This will allow you to hone in on the pieces you love and keep you on budget. This is also a good time to research those items you're interested in so that you have a sense of their true value.

4. Know your limit.
Go in with a budget. It's easy to get carried away at an estate sale, and you want to make sure your purchases are considered so your goods don't end up gathering dust in the garage.

5. Dress the part.
Show up looking your best. Others attending the auction just might steer clear if they think you mean business and have a higher budget than they do.
