5 Ingenious Ways to Save Money All Year Long!

Frugalista Amrita Singh shares five tips to help you save your money throughout the year.

1. Sell Some Stuff You Don't Use Anymore!

How does it save you money? It doesn't -- it actually makes you money! Start easy with an online classified ad in your own area on Craigslist or Kijiji. Try to sell locally so you don't have to worry about shipping hassles. The most common household items to sell are electronics, clothing and novelty gadgets -- these sell best.

2. Curate Frugal Events

How does it save you money? Imagine having access to a daily calendar of curated frugal events and activities happening in your city. This is a great way to have fun, and discover new things, without breaking the bank! Bring together a brain trust of friends, family and creative types and task everyone with finding frugal things to do in and around your city. Compile all the discoveries on a shared online calendar.

3. Stock Up On Essential Spices

How does it save you money? We know there's plenty of money to be saved when you organize your pantry and commit to cooking at home. Building on that frugal tip, let's talk about the essential spices you should have. When you have these, you'll be able to make all manner of spice mixes, rubs and sauces.

This is my essential top ten list of spices:

  • cumin seeds or cumin powder
  • coriander seeds or coriander powder
  • cayenne pepper
  • smoked paprika
  • dried red chili peppers
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • oregano
  • kosher salt
  • whole peppercorns
4. Build A Frugalista Kit

How does it save you money? If you make a small investment for some staple items, they can be stretched in many different ways to help you save money on cleaning and freshening supplies.

Buy the following items:

  • vinegar
  • baking soda
  • rubbing alcohol
  • tea tree oil
  • coconut and/or olive oil
And make your own all-purpose cleaning cloths (and they're just one of many product hacks you can make on your own with these key ingredients!

To make your cleaning solution, just mix together water with a little rubbing alcohol and dish soap. Pour the solution on top of cut-up tea towels in a sealable jar. Works well for all cleaning needs and lasts in a container for months.

5. Start a Gift Stash Cupboard

How does it save you money? Life is busy and there are always events to attend, especially birthday parties and dinner parties. If you leave gift buying to the last minute, you will likely buy based on convenience vs. price. I know personalized gifts are always better& but sometimes a generic gift works really well too! Stock up on some generic gift-worthy items when you see them on sale. Store these items in one place along with gift bags and gift wrapping for easy access. My favourite items: pretty tea towel packaged with a nice spatula; warm socks packaged with a small blanket; a pretty journal with nice gel pen; a craft kit for kids.
