Southern Cooking in San Diego

Joey Fatone cooks up a traditional Southern meal with a few unique twists from two lovely ladies who live in San Diego.
We have touched back down in sunny San Diego with some good old classic American dishes with a twist.

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Jerrica Martin moved to San Diego in 2012 and brought her Southern style cooking with her. She and her good friend Megan Menefee are great cooks in their own respect, and lucky for us today, they are combining their skills to put a new spin on some classic family recipes.

Jerrica says she and her friend Megan have very different cooking styles.

"When I go shopping with Megan, it's almost a nightmare and an adventure at the same time," says Jerrica. "She'll grab a million things off the shelf and make this amazing meal you'd never think of."

We hit the kitchen with Megan's Watermelon Balsamic Bites. The combination of a balsamic glaze and this sweet summertime melon might be surprising, but all three agree that it tastes delicious.

"It's amazing with the watermelon," says Joey.

Jerrica grew up in Georgia, cooking stick-to-your-ribs Southern food made by her Grandpa. She shows Joey how to make Country Fried Steak, a recipe that fries seasoned breaded beef patties.

"The credit goes to my grandpa because he taught me how to make it, but I love to share it with people," says Jerrica.

"That's like Georgia, comfort, homegrown," says Joey. "That gravy is amazing."

Next, Megan and Jerrica combine their cooking styles together these loaded mashed potatoes. These delicious potatoes are flavored with bacon and bacon grease, horseradish, garlic and cheese.

"The idea with country potatoes is that you leave it a little bit chunky," says Jerrica. "It gives them some texture and flavor."

While they're mashing, Megan and Jerrica reveal they were both big N'Sync fans growing up, but Megan's favorite was Justin Timberlake, while Jerrica liked Lance Bass. Joey laughs as Jerrica admits that she was just 7 when the song "Bye, Bye, Bye" was released.

For dessert, Megan is whipping up a peach cornbread cake, a cross between cornbread and dessert that's topped with a brown sugar glaze.

While the cake is in the oven, Megan made cider-glazed carrots, made with apple cider and dijon mustard. Joey is intrigued by the taste, but isn't so sure.

"It's weird because it's got sweetness to it, but it's got that dijon mustard kick," says Joey.

With the cake finished, Joey flips it over out of the pan and drizzles it with a beautiful brown sugar glaze. The taste?

"This looks just like heaven right here," says Joey. "I think the glaze is what put it over the top."

Joey thanks the girls for a great day of cooking and praises their unique sense of taste and willlingness to try new flavor combinations.

"You have a little fun in the kitchen, and that's what it's all about," says Jerrica.
