Exploring Yosemite's South Rim
Yosemite National Park is one of the crown jewels in the national park system. Each year, over three million people visit Yosemite and most flock to the popular and well-developed tourist centers.
Glacier Point is one tourist spot that is wildly popular. It is the only place in the park you can drive close to the edge of Yosemite's 3,000 foot walls and look straight down to the stunning valley below.
But what most people miss is the breathtaking walk along Yosemite's South Rim that is relatively flat and provides unbeatable views.
By linking the short hike to Sentinel Dome from Glacier Point road to Taft Point along the Pohono Trail, you will treat yourself to one of the best day hikes in Yosemite while beating the crowds that gather at Glacier Point.
Another option for an outstanding day hike from Glacier Point is along the Panorama Trail to hidden Illiouette Fall. This 370-foot waterfall is one of the most beautiful in Yosemite but also one of the most rarely seen.
The 2-mile hike down to Illiouette Fall is on a mild grade with constant views of Yosemite's backcountry. Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada Falls frame these views as you enjoy a gradual descent into Illiouette Creek.
