Trench Coats

Trenches continue to be a runway stample. This classic coat is a must-have for your wardrobe.

"The Burberry family actually invented the trench coat back in the 1900s, and they made them for the British Army. They were actually used in the trenches, hence the word trench coat," explains Denise Hazen, co-owner of Cheeky Vintage boutique.

A signature trench is a khaki coat with clean lines and a belt at the waist.

Along with co-owner Tina Davis, Denise put together these trench tricks of the trade:
  • If you think a plain khaki trench washes you out, add a colorful scarf to brighten up your face.
  • Try different ways of tying the belt -- traditionally in front, wrapping the tail through the belt waist in a creative way, buckling it backwards, or adding your own belt.
  • With busy patterns, keep the underneath layers simple, monochromatic, and tailored.
  • As an investment piece, pick a trench that's a solid color. For fun and whimsy that may not last into next season, pick patterns or prints.
  • For petites: keep your jacket shorter with pants, wear longer trenches as dresses.
  • Busty gals: stick to single breasted coats, beware of thick fabrics that can make you look heavier.
