Skin Serums

Esthetician Jaclyn Losie says if you haven't incorporated a serum into your routine, now's the time!

Unlike a run-of-the-mill moisturizer, "Serums have a lot [more] active ingredients in them," Jaclyn says. "Because there's a lot of scientific technology in them, and they're going to be the best bang for your buck, they are what you should be spending your money on."

While serums can get expensive, a bottle will last a long time since you use just a few drops everyday.

As the owner of a skincare spa, Jaclyn knows that serums can be very confusing to consumers. Think of them as repair treatments. Here are the products she recommends for the most common skin types:

  • Look for retinol/retin-A (vitamin A) and peptides (ingredients like miristral or argireline)
  • Jaclyn's suggestions:
    • Hydrating Serum from PCA = $86
    • Hydrating Complex from Societe = $55
    • Vita-Rich Serum from Sanitas = $55
Dehydrated Skin
  • You can have dehydrated skin and oily/combination skin.
  • If you have more dry skin, look for a serum with an oil concentrate (ingredients like squalane, jojoba oil, sodium PCA)
  • Jaclyn likes:
    • Rejuven-A from Sanitas = $60
  • If you have more oily skin, look for hydration without oil (ingredients like hyaluronic acid).
  • Jaclyn likes:
    • ExLinea from PCA = $102
    • Intense Firming Complex from Societe = $116
  • Look for lightening agents (ingredients like kojic acid, arbutin, azelaic acid, lactic acid, and sometimes hydroquinone).
  • Jaclyn likes:
    • C-Quench from PCA = $74
    • Pigment Gel from PCA = $46
    • Pigment Gel HQ Free from PCA = $46
  • Serum go on after you wash your face but before your sunscreen or moisturizer.
  • You can mix some serums, but you shouldn't try it without consulting a skincare expert first.
  • Serums can be applied day or night. Ask your skincare professional because some are better applied in the morning and some work better at night.
