Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts is a workout trend that's become increasingly popular as a way to stay in shape, learn a new skill, and practice self-defense. However, you don't have to be a fighter to try it out.

MMA is a combination of jujitsu, judo, boxing, wrestling and sambo. But there are rules in place to avoid injury (no hair-pulling, eye-poking, etc.). Tony Torres-Aponte, owner of Urban Jungle, says, "It's cardio. It's anaerobic. It's aerobic. There's strengthening. It's everything. There's flexibility. There's breathing aspects to it. On top of all of that, it's really emotional." Rebecca gets a quick lesson in jabs, kicks, arm clenches, and punches before practice starts. "You're going to come to this class because it's going to make you feel very strong. It's going to make you feel safe," Torres-Aponte says. "And it's going to really add a maybe part of your life that's missing through trying other sports. It's going to make you feel really confident with yourself."
