How to Wear the Trendy Oversized Coat

The major outfit topper this season is the oversized coat! Here's how to pull off the trend without looking like you're wearing a potato sack.

Rebecca's Tips

To get the oversized coat look, Rebecca started with a vintage Gauthier jacket that cinches in at the waist and created two looks with it.

First, she says you can't borrow your man's jacket. You want to look for a coat that has a little bit of form and structure.

For the first look, she added jeans with a rolled up leg and a sparkly black sequin top underneath with a large gold necklace.

Next, for a girls' night out look, she put on a sparkly headband, a leather peplum shirt, a ponte knit legging and a suede bootie.

"The mixing of the textures in black really adds to your outfit," says Rebecca.

Karli Gillum

Fashion blogger and personal stylist Karli Gillum says oversized coats are this season's statement piece.

"The oversized lapel is reminiscent of the glamor of the fifties and sixties," says Karli.

She picks one in camel, which is super-hot this season and also a neutral that can be worn with any other color. For added style points, the coat's lapel turns into a hood, so you can wrap yourself in warmth.

Look for an attached belt (or add one) so you can wear it loose or cinch it at the waist. The coat itself should be the star of show, so keep the rest of your outfit simple.

Magen Pastor

Image consultant and lifestyle blogger Magen Pastor loves a coat in a bold color that acts as a statement piece.

She picks a color that can be used as a neutral, like red and pairs it with something a little unexpected - a whimsical sweater from French Connection with a puppy on it. She adds a collared shirt under the sweater and a leather skirt on the bottom. She tops the look off with an animal print tote bag.
