How to Use Coconut Oil in Your Beauty Routine

How to Use Coconut Oil in Your Beauty Routine

You've probably noticed that coconut oil is all the rage. However, while most people keep it in the kitchen, here are some great beauty reasons to keep it in your bathroom as well!

"Coconut oil is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial, which makes it a really good treatment for so many things," says salon owner Rachel Gower.

She says to look for organic, unrefined, unbleached, cold-pressed, and extra virgin. All of these things make it more pure. Another important thing to note is that its melting point is 76-degrees Fahrenheit. Because our skin is above 76-degrees, it literally melts right in.

Here are some beauty uses for coconut oil that Rachel loves:

Coconut Oil Whipped Body Butter Start with coconut oil in the solid form - below 76-degrees. Then, take:
  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil
  • few drops of any essential oil
Mix with a blender for about 6-7 minutes until it's fluffy. Scoop it into your favorite glass container and store it in the fridge, or if you keep your house cool enough keep it on your counter.

Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil

One of the most popular ways to use coconut oil is something called oil pulling. To try it, get about a tablespoon of oil, put it in your mouth, swish it around like mouthwash for about 20 minutes, and spit it out. The idea is it pulls all the impurities from your teeth and keeps your teeth looking whiter. Be careful the oil doesn't clog your sink! Rinse with hot water or spit into the

Coconut Oil Makeup Remover

Take a very small amount of coconut oil. Once it hits your hand it turns into liquid. Apply that to your skin in an upward motion. If you wear contacts, take them out first. Get the hottest washcloth you can, and hold it in front of your face to steam it. As the washcloth starts to cool off, use it to remove the oil in an upward motion, making sure that you get all of it off. After that, use your normal cleanser.

Homemade Moisturizing Soap

Take your favorite liquid hand soap (about 1/2 cup) and add about 1-tablespoon of coconut oil. Mix it in your soap dispenser very well. Depending on the size of your dispenser you might want to double the recipe.

Coconut Oil Lip Gloss

  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons of aloe vera
  • 2 teaspoons of Vaseline
Mix those together and you'll have a longer lasting, very shiny lip gloss. If you want to add a little color, mix in a bit of lipstick or other gloss. Put it in a container and it's ready to go!

Coconut Oil Makeup Brush Cleaner

  • 3 parts baby shampoo
  • 1 part coconut oil
Whisk the ingredients together, then swirl each dirty brush. Rub with your fingers, then rinse well. Lay flat to dry.
