Hair Gloss

Salon owner Rachel Gower says shiny strands are a sign of youth and health. As we age and overprocess our hair, that luster can fade away. So Rachel is giving us a rejuvenation regimen.

Luckily, there are four areas that you can really focus on to get your gloss back: nutrition, periodic treatments, hair color, and home styling.

Nutrition:
One of the most important things to keep your hair shiny is essential fatty acids. They're Omega 3s, Omega 6s, and Omega 9s. Another brand new way to keep your hair super shiny and very healthy is with a supplement that contains hyalouronic acid.

Periodic Treatments:
One of the easiest ways to restore shine to your hair is to mix together one egg, a little bit of honey, and some olive oil. The egg will fortify the follicles making them stronger with protein. The olive oil will restore shine. The honey acts as a humectants which attracts moisture into the hair. Apply the mask to clean, wet hair. Massage and leave on for five minutes. Then wash and style as normal. If home remedies aren't for you, most salons offer in-salon treatments that will restore both protein and moisture to your hair. Rachel's favorite is Nutri Thermique by Kerastase.

Hair Color:
If you feel like your hair color isn't as shiny or as lustrous as it once was, ask your colorist to add a clear glaze to the color formula -- there are also oils that you can add into the color formula like argan or camelia.

If you're not yet coloring your hair but really crave extra shine, Sebastian has a product that's called cellophane.

Home Styling:
When it comes to products, there are two basic ways to add shine to your hair. One is adding a silicone product and the other is using an oil product.

The thing to remember about silicones is they are a quick fix. They're not actually going to repair your hair, but they will provide some thermal protection against heat. They can also help protect your hair color. Try Goldwell Melting Diamonds or Oscar Blandi's Pronto Gloss.

Oil products can repair and restore radiance. Moroccan oil is great before or after a blow dry. Essence Absolute uses camellia oil which has been shown to penetrate into the hair shaft six times fast and deeper than other oils. Just remember to use a boar bristle brush to distribute natural oils throughout your hair.
