Braids

This season is all about braids. However, it's not Little House on the Prairie style. They're inventive, stylish and even messy!

"Braids are so hot right now. They come back about every ten years or so, but this time, they're hotter than ever," says Salon Owner Rachel Gower. Whether you plan to do a faux hawk braid, a headband braid or an elaborate updo, it's best to start with braiding basics!

THE FRENCH BRAID

  • Start with three sections of hair
  • Pull hair from the right piece, and cross over the center piece, always picking up new hair as you cross over the middle
  • Pull hair from the left piece and cross over the center again, always picking up new hair as you cross over the middle
  • Grab and cross, alternating left and right, until you have no more hair to grab and then braid to the bottom.
THE FISH TAIL BRAID
  • Start with two sections of hair
  • Holding both sections, take a piece of hair from the outside of the right section and cross over to the left section. Then, take hair from the outside of the left section and cross over to the right.
  • While doing this, pick up extra hair from the outside of your two sections until you're out of hair, then fish braid to the bottom and secure.
  • The smaller the strands you take, the more detail you'll see in the braid, but the longer it will take!
ROPE BRAID
  • The Rope Braid is the most difficult braid to do yourself and looks best at the hairline, but when it's mastered, it truly resembles a rope!
  • Start with three sections of hair.
  • Twist each strand towards the face and wrap back.
  • Pick up the next section closest to the hair to the hairline, grab some new hair, twist forward, and wrap back.
  • Keep the grabbing hair, twisting forward, and wrapping back cycle going until you've reached the end and secure.
  • Stylist Carri Semmelrogge says, "It's okay if it looks a little messy because it looks more modern."
