Caring for your Personal Property
Are you turning your treasure into trash?! Find out how to protect the stuff in your home so you're personal property can pay you back when you need it to.
Preservation, collection display and proper storage are all vital to maintaining value. Here are some tips from Dr. Lori when it comes to protecting your valuables:
- Art and antiques like to live where you like to live -- they don't like the attic or the basement.
- Use plastic tubs to store your items and wrap them in white tissue paper or white paper towels -- not bubble wrap. The tubs will protect against potential water damage and the paper will allow the items to breath and help create air pockets.
- Antiques should be at relative humidity (@ 55% humidity).
- When hanging art stay away from vents. It is not a good location because of the changing temperatures in that space.
- Temperature should be between 68 - 72 degrees.
- Too much sun can be a bad thing!
- Be careful of interior and exterior walls. (Exterior walls are not a great place for displaying your art/ antiques).
- Open your china closet, please! Open it once a month for about 8 hours to let it air out.
- Don't stack dishes any more than 6 plates high!
