How to Redo Kitchen Cabinets with Paint and Molding

How to Redo Kitchen Cabinets with Paint and Molding

Brand new kitchen cabinets are expensive, so Monica and Jess show how to save money by transforming outdated cabinets with paint, trim and new hardware. Here's how to give your cabinets a facelift with this easy DIY project.

We gave these old cabinets a whole new lease on life, just by adding inexpensive trim molding. We used 3" lattice trim to frame each cabinet door and added a center piece of molding to give it a bit of a Shaker feel. Here's our DIY plan:

You'll need:
  • 3" lattice trim
  • old cabinet doors, removed and hardware removed
  • table saw
  • nail gun and finishing nails
  • wood glue
  • paintable caulk
  • semi-gloss paint
1. Measure your cabinets and cut down your trim molding accordingly. We wanted a simple look, so we made straight cuts - no mitering needed.

2. Attach your molding using finishing nails and wood glue. Make sure your nails are long enough to go into the cabinet, but not so long that they pop through the other side.

3. After attaching the molding, fill any cracks with paintable caulk to ensure a seamless finish.

4. Paint your newly faced cabinets in a semi-gloss paint.

For a small investment in wood and paint, you've just given your kitchen a major style upgrade!
