DIY Leaning Ladder Shelf

There's no need to spend a lot of money on a trendy ladder shelf. Just grab your old wooden ladder from the garage and use that as the starting point for a brand new shelf! Here's how to do this easy DIY project.

You'll need:
  • Wood ladder
  • Plank of 1x10 pine
  • chop saw
  • sanding block
  • paint or stain
1. Before you do anything else, cut the back half of your ladder off using a saw. You will only be working with the front half.

2. Sand the entire ladder down using a belt sander or a sanding pad. Our ladder was in pretty bad shape, but we knew we were going to paint it.  If you're going to stain the ladder, make sure you sand it down to the bare wood.

3. Measure the distance between the sides of the ladder. Remember that each step/rung will have a different measurement - larger at the bottom, smaller at the top! Using a chop saw, cut the 1x10 board to fit the measurements for each shelf. Sand the edges until smooth.

4. Attach each shelf to the step of the ladder by screwing in from underneath the step. That way you won't see the screws at all from above!

5. Paint or stain the entire thing and the construction part is done. Attach the ladder shelf to the wall with brackets so that it stays upright.
