Inside Scoop for a Bedroom Makeover
by Fabian Scrivani

This week on HWLQ, we glam-up a drab bedroom with inspiration from the Marin Designer Showcase House. After visiting the showcase, Lisa and I were buzzing with ideas of how we could get similar looks for less, and what a dramatic difference a few bold statement pieces could make. It was key to find the right room too, and we were lucky when we came across Julie on the Facebook page. Julie lives in Benicia in a gorgeous area right by the water with her cat Lulu. She is a busy professional, often working 50+ hours a week, and wrote to us hoping for a serene and tranquil bedroom that could help her relax after a tough week. An inspiration room + the perfect homeowner = a game plan, and off we went to shop!

Lets talk wall color. We didn't choose a color that was too bright or too rich this time since the walls in our inspiration room were a very subtle neutral tone. The color we used was a silvery tan, khaki tone that added a sense of warmth to the room. We added a stencil to the walls just below the ceiling in a shade slightly lighter than the wall color to add interest and a feminine touch.

The pice de rsistance in the inspiration room was def. the four poster canopy bed and all the sumptuous linens dressing it -- easily the bed and linens cost between $4-$6 K. Lisa was incredibly lucky to find a very similar bed frame on overstock.com for $300!! We dressed Julie's bed with simple white bedding and added pops of color with black, leopard, and white lamb fur pillows. An incredible sable fur throw in the showcase room added luxury and incredible style-- we found a faux mink throw at Cost Plus World Market for $50 that looked real and bumped up the lux factor. Two white ceramic lamps from Pottery Barn with black cone shades from Lamps Plus mimic the ostrich egg lamps in the inspiration bedroom and are much more practical. A zebra stenciled cowhide rug over a twisted jute rug adds a comfortable feel underfoot. Replacing the dated vertical blinds with simple wood blinds and flowing linen drapes softens the lines of the room and will help Julie control the light better. A desk opposite the bed that is just deep enough for a laptop and a few files will keep the bedroom stress-free. Lisa and I are HUGE fans of candles to add instant ambiance to any room. We merchandised a dresser beneath the window with lots of them in different size/shape/colored holders to add interest. A potted corn plant adds life and a needed pop of green against a dark carved wood screen next to the window. Finishing touches included a collection of frames with printed artwork and fresh flowers by the bed.
