Stress-Free Cleaning with a Weekly Cleaning Schedule

Get your home spotless in no time with this easy weekly cleaning schedule from a professional organizer! Follow this plan and the only finger you have to lift on Saturday and Sunday is the remote!

Does it feel like your week is so jam packed that the only time you have to clean is the weekend? Laurie Cacippo felt the same way.

"My whole week is focused working, getting things done, hopefully going to the gym. I really just want to spend my weekend focused on friends and family," says Laurie. "I don't want to think about housework."

Professional organizer Andrew Mellen, author of Unstuff Your Life, shares his plan to tackle the chores that will leave you free on the weekend, with simple tasks to do each day and one main room each weekday.

Daily:
  • Dishes and wipe down the kitchen counters. Use the dishwasher if you have one. It saves you time and money.
  • Make the bed. This takes 1-3 minutes each morning. Get kids and your spouse to help!
"Nobody likes to come home to a house with an unmade bed," says Andrew.
  • Declutter by putting things back where they belong.
  • Put mail in one location for sorting later.
"You don't need to open your mail everyday, but you do need to put it in it's home, so when it comes time to process it, you only have to go one place to find it," says Andrew.
Time: 15-30 minutes

Monday: Kitchen
Clean the counters, sweep and mop, go through the fridge, tidy up pantry, prepare any soup or slow-cooker meals.
Time: 30-60 minutes

Tuesday: Bathroom
Clean the sink, toilet, showerand floor. Andrew's tip: Give yourself an extra 30 minutes in the morning and you can clean everything and then shower yourself.
Time: 20-30 minutes

Wednesday: Laundry
"It's going to take you two to three hours to do the laundry, but it's the only day you have to do it, and you can do it while you're getting other things done - like extra work you brought home or helping kids with their homework," says Andrew.
Get help if you live with other people - kids and spouses can fold, match socks, put clean and folded clothes away.
Time: 2-3 hours

Thursday: Paperwork
Paperwork, including the mail. "This is the day of the week that you're going to pay the bills, process the mail and do anything that you have to do," says Andrew. "You can know that if you open the mail on a weekly basis, you're never going to be late with anything. I promise you: once a week is fine."
Time: 45-60 minutes

Friday: Living Areas
Vacuum, dust, go through magazines. This even leaves you time for a Friday night out!
Time: 30-45 minutes

Saturday and Sunday: Enjoy your weekend and do the things you love since your house is neat and clean!
