Money-Saving Natural Garden and Pest Control Tips

Are you tired of battling weeds and pests in your yard with harsh chemicals? Check out solutions for outdoor problems that are all natural.

Bruce Lubin, author of the book, Who Knew 10,001 Easy Solutions to Every Day Problems!, has dozens of ways to make your life easier. He promises to cut every one of your bills by following the tips in his book. He shares a few of his money-saving tips for your yard.

Help your lawn and plants look better on a dime:

Brown Grass: Sprinkle Epsom salts over the browning part of your lawn. Cover with a nice layer of water to soak in. Bruce says the magnesium in the Epsom salts will revive the lawn in a matter of days.

Revive Pepper Plants: Use matches. Place matches face down into the potted plant. The sulfur in the match will give your plant new life.

Revive Roses: Take crunched up egg shells and mix with water in an empty spray bottle. Spray mixture on roses to help bring them back to life!

Revive Houseplants: Crush a clove of garlic and mix with 2 cups of water. Shake it up and spray on your diseased plant. There will be no smell.

Getting Rid of Weeds: Sprinkle baking soda on weeds. Another cheap way to get rid of weeds is to use straight vinegar. Bruce says spraying vinegar on the weeds will kill the weeds and nothing else.

Protect your plants from pests:

Squirrel Fighter:

  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • shake of cayenne pepper
  • 2 capfuls of Murphy's Oil
  • 2 cups of water
Directions: Combine 2 tablespoons hot sauce, a shake of cayenne pepper, 2 capfuls of Murphy's Oil and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray on Plants or whatever you are trying to protect.

Second Pest Fighter:

  • 3/4 cup ammonia
  • 1 cup water
Directions: Mix ammonia and water in a spray bottle. Spray mixture on garbage cans or whatever you want to keep pests clear from.

Mosquito Fighter:

  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
Directions: Put vanilla in a small spray bottle and spray it on your arms or exposed areas. This will keep mosquitoes away.

Other ways to fight mosquitoes: Plant basil on your outdoor patio or keep a dryer sheet in your pocket.

Cleaning Bird Bath:

  • Newspaper
  • Bleach
  • Water
  • Olive oil
Directions: Clean mildew and keep out bugs. Place newspaper in the birdbath and pour about 3 cups of bleach on top. Let soak for a few hours. Remove paper and rinse out with water. Once it's cleaned, put water and a few drops of olive oil in the water. This will keep away bugs and pests!
