Keep Kids Safe

With the internet, cell phones and social media - it can be a full-time job just keeping up with our kids. They are our most prized possessions so what can we do to keep them safe?

Alison Rhodes, AKA the "Safety Mom," travels across the country showing people different things they can do to help keep their kids safe. She says it all started with tragedy.

"My first child died of sudden infant death syndrome in 1997 and while SIDS is still unpreventable and unpredictable, childhood accidents are the leading cause of death and injury and almost all of them can be prevented so I felt if I could help save one child's life, I would have done something in honor of my son - so the Safety Mom was born," she explained.

She talks about everything from newborns to teens.

Cyber Bulling - There's a great social media monitoring software called True Care online. It will allow you to check out your child's Facebook pages and all their social media accounts to see who is friending them and to see what words are being said. It's $9.99 a month service.

Driving - MOTOsafety will give parents a report card at the end of the day on their child's driving. This is a monthly service for $9.99 a month and $79 to get it installed or you can do it yourself.

Safety Bag - The Isafe bag is a a backpack or computer bag that has built in alarms and strobe lights so if someone feels in danger they just go underneath the strap, pull the rip cord. It's a great safety device for $79.99.

Home Monitor - The ADT Pulse monitoring system sends you a text when your child comes home.

Rhodes says you should talk to your child before you buy one of these items.

"I always say you shouldn't do this stuff without talking to your child first - you're not trying to spy on them - you're trying to start open lines of communication to let them know I'm trying to help you," she said. "I have to tell you the thing that doesn't cost anything is open lines of communication, you can't start talking to your kids when they are 16, they aren't going to listen to you - 5, 6 years old - start building open lines of communication so they know they can come to you if they have an issue."
