DIY Lip Gloss

If you love lip gloss and balms but hate paying the expensive price tag, why not make your own! Tamika Fletcher, Co-Owner of Natural Resources Salon says it's very easy and inexpensive to do and has the added bonus of knowing exactly what you're putting on your skin.

Some ingredients she'll be using include cocoa butter which she says is good for moisturizing and healing the skin and Vitamin E to help preserve the products. She also uses honey which she says is a good moisturizer and peppermint essential oil which helps heal dried, chapped lips. Tamika says a frugal way to add color to your lip balm is to add crayons! Don't worry, they are safe and non-toxic.

What you'll need:
3 tbsp. Cocoa butter
4-5 chocolate chips
I capsule of vitamin E

Melt Ingredients in microwave safe container and refrigerate

What you'll need:
3 teaspoons grated unbleached beeswax
5 teaspoons carrier oil (sunflower, castor, or jojoba or coconut oil)
6 or 7 drops essential oil peppermint or 1 teaspoon honey

Melt the beeswax and carrier oil together in the top of a double boiler or microwave stirring to combine. Remove from heat, add honey and essential oil. Mix thoroughly so the honey does not clump.

To add a little color, stir in a tiny dab of lipstick with a coffee stirrer. Pour the mixture into containers; let sit 20 minutes before covering or moving. For glossier lip balm, use 2 teaspoons wax and 8 teaspoons carrier oil.

What you'll need:
1/2 oz of light to color free oil
1 pinch of beeswax
Bella terra or any cosmetic pigment powder

Heat beeswax and oil for one minute in microwave in safe container or until beeswax is melted. Cool for 5 minutes before adding pigment powders. Stir gently until color is mixed throughout. Transfer to suitable lip gloss container. New glass roll on fragrance bottles can be used, only if it has never been used for fragrance oil.

What you'll need:
3 teaspoons grated unbleached beeswax
5 teaspoons carrier oil (sunflower, castor, or jojoba or coconut oil)
6 or 7 drops peppermint essential oil optional or 1 teaspoon honey
1-2 teaspoons worth of crayon or lipstick for color

Use for color:
Shimmer Eye shadow, lipstick , or crayon

Mix the almond oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax together in microwave safe bowl. Microwave for a couple of minutes or until mixture is melted. You can also use a double boiler. Stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in essential oils or color of choice while mixture is warm enough to melt additives. Pinch open the vitamin e capsule and squeeze contents into mixture. Transfer into a small container or tin and allow to cool.
