DIY Beauty Products for Men

DIY Beauty Products for Men

Move over ladies this one is for the men! We usually think of women when we think of beauty and getting pretty, but we can't leave out the men, they deserve to look great, too!

Using natural ingredients, Tamika Fletcher, owner of Natural Resources Hair Salon shows us how to make a pre-shave skin soother, shaving lotion and after shave for a fraction of the cost!

Tamika says many retail products often use unnecessary fillers or additives that can irritate your skin. When you make them at home, you know exactly what is going in it and you can actually make two times the amount you can buy in the store.

Each product requires an infusion, which needs to sit for about 8 hours before you can add the remaining ingredients.

These DIY products require fresh herbs like fennel seeds which Tamika says are great for deep cleansing your pores, calendula which soothes your skin, burdock root which is good if you have eczema or psoriasis and comfrey which is known to reduce the signs of aging. You can find these products at your local natural foods grocery store or online.

Tamika recommends using distilled water when making these products. She says tap water can have ingredients in it that will cause your product to go rancid.

And, ladies, don't be afraid to borrow your man's shaving cream -- it will work just as well for you!

1 teaspoon of fennel seed
1 tablespoon of comfrey
2 tablespoons of chamomile
2 tablespoons of calendula
8 oz of water
4 tablespoons of glycerin
1 tablespoon of aloe Vera gel

Make herbal infusion with herb, 2 oz of glycerin and water and let steep for 4-8 hours. Pour 3 oz of strained infusion, 1 tablespoon of glycerin, and 1 tablespoon of aloe into spray mist bottle. Apply after shaving or cleaning face or as needed. Refrigerate and keep up to four weeks. This can also be used as hair rinse or soothing foot soak!

2 teaspoons of comfrey root
2 teaspoons of burdock root
1 Cup of water
1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
1/4 teaspoon jojoba oil
6 tbs of liquid castile soap
30 drops of rosemary
Cheesecloth or tea bag

Place herbs in tea bag or cheese cloth and make an herb and water infusion similar to steeping tea. Allow the infusion to steep 8 hours or overnight. Remove herbs from water. Gently heat infusion and add coconut oil until melted. Add liquid Castile soap and jojoba oil. Pour into bottle, drop in essential oils, cap and shake before each use. Store in refrigerator. Makes 9 oz. You can replace infusion for plain water if you do not have access to herbs.

16 tablespoons vodka or brandy (80-100 proof)
8 tablespoons of rum (optional)
8 tablespoons of bay leaves (herbal infusion)
4 Sticks of Cinnamon, broken in pieces
Fresh Zest from a Small Orange
4 tablespoons of aloe gel
2 teaspoon of glycerin
4 teaspoon of distilled witch hazel
24 drops sweet orange essential oil
24drops of tea tree essential oil

Place herbs in tea bag or cheese cloth and make an herb and water infusion similar to steeping tea. Allow the infusion to steep 8 hours or overnight. Remove herbs from water. Pour all ingredients in a mist bottle or glass bottle. Mist on after shave to refresh and protect skin. The essential oils can be adjusted. Add slowly to avoid over scenting your product. Yields 6 oz.
