Breakfast Cereal

Let's face it parents, when you are in a pinch, cereal is the go to breakfast item so you go through quite a bit of it. If you're a loyal brand name shopper, you may want to consider trying store brand. It could save you a lot of money.

The choices in the cereal aisle are endless. There is Shredded Wheat, Corn Flakes and Cocoa Crispy just to name a few. And next to every national brand cereal -- like Frosted Flakes -- there is a store brand alternative.

"If you look at Honey Nut Cheerios, the regular one and the bag of Honey Nut Toasted Oats, you look at the ingredient labels, they are made of the same thing," said Amanda Grossman from Frugalconfessions.com

We know the price of the store brand is cheaper but exactly how much?

"What we found was that the big box of Honey Hut Cheerios is 21 ounces it cost $5.19. This bag that is 32 ounces is going to run you $3.39, so that's a significant savings," says Amanda.

That makes a 21 ounce box of Honey Nut Cheerios 24 cents an ounce. The store brand is 10 cents an ounce -- that's more than half the price.

Another example is Captain Crunch Berries. The price $1.99 for a 13 ounce box and the store brand is $3.39 for 32 ounces. Even with the national brand on sale the store is still a better deal by 25 percent.

But what about taste? Would kids be able to tell the difference? Super Saver Erin Libranda set up a blind taste test with several kids in her neighborhood.

"The A's and B's we have two different kinds of cereal, one is the name brand and one is the store brand," says Erin.

First up, Kellogg's Fruit Loops verses Kroger's Fruit and Frosted O's.

It was a tie. Four people liked A better and four people liked B better.

Let's just say the kids couldn't tell the difference in taste. The next cereal -- Kellogg's Cocoa Krispies versus Kroger Cocoa Crispy Rice.

All of the kids preferred the store brand Cocoa Crispy Rice better than the national brand.

The store brand on the other two cereals were also given a passing grade.

If your kids won't budge on their favorite cereal, consider combining a store brand with their national brand in an air tight container -- they probably won't be able to tell the difference.
